In the early 1970’s Lamu
acquired a reputation which attracted people who wanted to opt
out of the “rat race”. It was classed as a place of fantasy and
other worldliness wrapped in a cloak of medieval romance. The
attraction to Lamu was obvious, alike to Kathmandu both are
remote, unique and fascinating, self contained societies that
had escaped the fast pace of the 20th Century. They
retained their culture, their centuries old way of life and
their architect intact
.
"More Dhows
than anywhere"
Lamu remains much the same
today – to a degree. It has almost exclusively a Muslim
population. It is Kenya’s oldest living town. To reach Lamu
Island you either fly to Manda Island and connect via a boat, or
use the launch from the mainland. The district commissioner owns
the only motor powered vehicle (although there is the odd
tractor). Streets are too narrow and winding to accommodate
anything other than pedestrians and donkeys. There are probably
more Dhows to be seen here than anywhere else on the East Coast.
